WHAT IS LEV

LEV is an engineering control used to reduce the risk of inhalation of substances hazardous to health in a workplace, such as dust, gas, mist, fume or vapour.

Typically, these substances may cause respiratory diseases such as occupational asthma, cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

LEV systems perform an essential function to protect health. They must be properly designed, installed, commissioned, tested and maintained to be effective. It is essential that employers use competent LEV engineers.

LEV EQUIPMENT TESTING

LEV or Local Exhaust Ventilation systems are designed to protect workers from hazardous dust and fumes. To ensure the systems are functioning correctly they need regular testing by a qualified person.

The Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 requires the thorough examination and testing at least every 14 months for Fume extraction equipment and Respiratory Protective Equipment.

WHAT'S INVOLVED

Our experienced engineers are able to carry out this testing on site during machine services to reduce costs using the latest test equipment and practices.

Testing is carried out in accordance with the guidelines set out in the Health & Safety Executives Guidance HSG258.

  • A thorough visual examination is carried out of the equipment to verify the LEV is in efficient working order, in good repair and in a clean condition.
  • Mechanical and electrical testing of the unit and its working functions against manufacturers specifications.
  • Cleaning/replacement of filters if required.
  • Pass of fail certification.

WELDING FUME REGULATIONS

WHAT IS RPE?

If you cannot achieve suitable protection of personnel using LEV equipment alone then suitable personal RPE equipment must be implemented.

This can be something as simple as an FFP3 Fume mask to a full PAPR welding fume respirator and helmet.

If you are using FFP Type masks then correct face fitting is essential. Recent HSE inspections have highlighted that 50% of personnel were found to have incorrect fitment.

At BWS we supply some of the leading welding fume safety equipment to keep you and your employees protected. As part of this we also carry out inspections and testing to fume extraction equipment according to legislation
