Welder generators are essentially engine-driven welding power sources with their own onboard electrical generation, so they’re aimed at jobs where a reliable mains supply either isn’t available or isn’t trusted. In a bodyshop or repair workshop that usually means outdoor fabrication, mobile repairs, work on customer sites, or supporting a bay that suffers from poor or unstable power.
In practical terms you’re using them for stick, flux-core and, with the right setup, MIG and TIG, while also running grinders, lights and small tools off the same unit. The key considerations are matching welding output to the electrodes and material thickness you genuinely use, and sizing the auxiliary kVA to cover the tools you’ll run at the same time, with a sensible margin.
A common issue I see is overspecifying the generator side and underspecifying the welding duty cycle, leading to hot, stressed machines on longer burns. Another is dragging around units that are far too heavy for how often they’re moved.
Get the process capability, duty cycle, kVA and portability right for your workload, and a good welder generator becomes a reliable, efficient bit of kit for field and backup welding rather than an expensive compromise.
