AVDEL ESN50

The Avdel ESN50 is an SPR gun for installing self‑piercing rivets where a mechanical clinch is required, typically used on outer skins, wheelarches and structural panels with limited rear access. The model is now obsolete and spares are increasingly scarce; we hold some anvils and can modify units to accept GYSPRESS anvils to extend service life. When selecting, verify anvil availability and compatibility, consider refurbishment or a modern replacement, and ensure calibration and maintenance support.

  • Check anvil stock and compatibility before ordering
  • Ask about the GYSPRESS anvil modification to prolong service life
  • Plan for regular calibration, correct space blocks and routine maintenance

Paul Jones says

The AVDEL ESN50 is an SPR rivet gun that is now obsolete. I’m Paul Jones, Technical Director at BWS Ltd, and I still see these tools in many repair shops. They are used to set self‑piercing rivets on body panels where spot welding is impractical, typically during repair of outer skins, wheelarches and structural panels where access and edge condition vary. One key technical consideration is anvil compatibility and condition — the correct anvil profile and a flat, undamaged seating face are essential for a proper clinch. Another is control of stroke and clamping pressure; worn jaws or incorrect space blocks lead to under‑formed joints. From experience a common issue is poor settings caused by worn anvils or missing space blocks, rather than the hydraulic unit itself. Although spares for the ESN50 are becoming scarce, we have adapted versions to accept GYSPRESS anvils and offer alternative tools. With the right anvils and routine maintenance the ESN50 can remain serviceable, but plan for replacement where availability of parts is limited.
