Engineer Advice

Paul Jones

Paul Jones says

Plasma cutters in a bodyshop are mainly used for fast, controlled cutting of panel steel, chassis sections and brackets where a grinder is either too slow or introduces too much heat and debris. Telwin machines are compact enough for bench work but have enough capacity for typical automotive thicknesses and light fabrication.

In daily use, air quality and electrical supply matter more than most people think. Dirty, wet air will quickly ruin consumables and give an unstable arc, so a decent filter/regulator close to the machine is worth fitting. Likewise, make sure the supply circuit actually matches the unit’s input requirements; undervoltage shows up as poor piercing and rough edges.

A common issue I see is operators trying to drag the tip directly on the work without the correct spacer, which shortens tip life and leads to inconsistent cut width. Slow travel speed also dumps too much heat into the panel and warps thin sections.

Set up correctly with clean air, good earth and the right torch technique, Telwin plasma cutters are a reliable, efficient way to make accurate cuts with minimal rework.
