Expert Advice

Dan Jennings

Dan Jennings says

This is a 40 amp compressed-air plasma cutter for controlled cutting of steel, stainless steel, galvanised steel and aluminium in a workshop environment.

I would use it for cutting brackets, panels, sections and repair pieces where a saw or abrasive disc would be slower and introduce more distortion. The contact-start torch makes it practical for general fabrication and bodyshop work, provided the material is clean and there is a suitable earth connection.

The air supply needs attention. Clean, dry compressed air is essential, as moisture or contamination will affect the arc, consumable life and cut quality. Although it is capable of cutting material up to around 15 mm, the best results come from matching the current, travel speed and air pressure to the material thickness rather than relying on the maximum figure.

A common issue is poor cutting caused by worn torch consumables or dragging the torch too slowly, which leaves excessive dross underneath. Keeping the torch consumables in good condition and setting the machine correctly makes a noticeable difference.

Used within its practical capacity, it is a reliable workshop cutter for repeatable repair and fabrication work.

FAQs

What can the Telwin Technology Plasma 41 XT cut?
It cuts conductive metals including mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium, with a maximum cutting thickness of 15mm. It is suitable for workshop fabrication, maintenance, tube and box-section work, and vehicle bodyshop repairs.
What power supply does the Technology Plasma 41 XT need?
It runs from a single-phase 230V supply and has a 10–40A cutting range. The machine is rated at 35A at a 30% duty cycle at 40°C, so allow for suitable workshop circuit protection and ventilation.
Does this plasma cutter need compressed air?
Yes. The Technology Plasma 41 XT uses an external compressed-air supply, with the manufacturer specifying approximately 100 litres per minute at 4–5 bar. A clean, dry air supply is essential for reliable arc performance and reasonable consumable life.
What is supplied and what consumables does it use?
The machine is supplied with a 4m plasma torch and uses replaceable plasma torch consumables. It includes consumables-change warning and protective features for thermal, overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent and air-failure conditions. Genuine Telwin consumables and suitable air filtration should be used for professional workshop service.
