Engineer Advice

Dan Jennings

Dan Jennings says

This is a 35mm² welding cable set at 5 metres, typically used for MMA arc welding electrode and earth leads in professional workshops. In day-to-day use it sits between the welder and the workpiece, carrying the welding current, so it needs to be flexible enough to route around vehicles and benches while maintaining good conductivity and insulation.

At 35mm² over 5m, you are in the normal range for up to roughly 200–250A in typical bodyshop duty cycles, which covers most repair welding on mild and stainless steels. The main technical considerations are matching the cable size to your welding current and keeping total lead length sensible so you do not introduce unnecessary voltage drop or hot spots. Connector size (usually 35–50 type) also needs to suit the machine sockets.

A common issue I see is cables underrated for the current, running warm and eventually hardening the insulation, especially near the lugs. When correctly sized and terminated, a 35mm² 5m set gives reliable performance, stable arc conditions and consistent results in everyday bodyshop welding.
