Engineer Advice
Mark Allen says
The SWP Powergen uses a Honda GX390 petrol engine and Mecc Alte alternator, with a stated continuous output of 7 kVA. Recoil starting keeps the arrangement straightforward, but the alternator and connected equipment still need suitable protection and correct earthing before use.
A common issue with generators in workshops is sizing only for the running load. Welders, compressors and other inductive equipment can draw considerably more during starting or when the arc is struck, so avoid operating continuously at the limit. Keep the machine level, ventilated and protected from rain, and check oil, fuel and connections before each use. Correct loading and regular maintenance are what make this type of generator reliable for practical workshop work.
