Engineer Advice

Paul Jones

Paul Jones says

This is a spare mild steel roller head for Sumner pipe stands and roller supports used in fabrication and workshop handling. I see it as a practical replacement part for maintaining stable support when rotating, positioning or feeding mild steel tube and section during fitting, welding or assembly. The main points I check are roller condition, bearing smoothness and that the head matches the stand correctly before use. Mild steel rollers suit general workshop work, but they need to be kept clean and free from weld spatter, grit and heavy scale, otherwise the workpiece can drag or mark. A common issue is fitting the wrong roller type for the material or leaving a worn head in service too long, which makes the stand less predictable. Used properly, it keeps material moving consistently and helps the job stay controlled, which is what matters in day-to-day workshop work.
