Expert Advice

Paul Jones

Paul Jones says

This is a compact 130A MIG welder intended for general fabrication, maintenance and lighter vehicle repair work. I would use it for mild-steel brackets, panels, small repairs and workshop fabrication where a portable 230V machine is more practical than a larger industrial unit.

It can be operated with shielding gas or flux-cored wire by changing the polarity, giving useful flexibility for indoor and outdoor work. With a 30–130A range and forced-air cooling, it is suited to thinner and medium-gauge steel, but the duty cycle must be respected, particularly at higher current. The standard 13A supply is adequate for lighter work; sustained maximum output may require a correctly installed higher-rated supply, subject to an electrician’s assessment.

A common issue with small MIG machines is poor weld quality caused by incorrect polarity, unsuitable wire, inadequate earth connection or contaminated steel. Set the wire size, feed tension, gas flow and torch distance carefully before judging the machine. Used within its duty cycle and maintained properly, it is a dependable workshop welder for controlled repair and fabrication work.

Technical Features

  • Heavyduty highoutput transformer provides adjustable welding current from 30–130A for general workshop and bodyshop welding work.
  • Forcedair cooling helps control transformer temperature and supports a longer duty cycle during repeated welding.
  • Gas and gasless operation allows use with CO2, Argon or CO2/Argon mix, with polarity changed for gasless fluxcored wire.
  • Supplied set up for gasless welding, allowing work without a shieldinggas bottle when used with suitable fluxcored wire.
  • Nonlive 2m torch helps prevent accidental arc strikes when the trigger is not operated.
  • Contoured torch grip improves control and steadiness when laying weld beads.
  • Suitable for wire reels from 0.7–5kg, giving flexibility for different workshop consumable requirements.
  • Includes a mini gas regulator, wire spool, 1m gas hose, earth cable, hose clamps and contact tip.
  • Compact wheeled cabinet is practical for moving between repair bays and small workshop areas.
  • 13A 230V supply suits standard UK workshop power outlets.
  • Thermal protection and an overload indicator help protect the welder during excessive loading.
  • Simple rotary controls provide straightforward adjustment for practical MIG welding setup.
  • Suitable for welding with CO2, Argon or mixed CO2/Argon shielding gas.
  • Transformer is covered by a lifetime guarantee, with a threeyear product guarantee.

FAQs

What welding range does the Sealey SUPERMIG130 provide?
It provides a 30–130A welding current range, making it suitable for general workshop fabrication, maintenance work and lighter automotive repairs. The forced-air cooling system helps manage transformer heat during use.
Can it be used with gas and gasless MIG wire?
Yes. It can be used in gas or gasless mode. Gasless welding requires flux-cored wire, while gas operation is suitable with CO2, argon or a CO2/argon mix. Changing between gas and gasless operation requires the polarity to be changed.
What power supply does the SUPERMIG130 need?
It runs from a 230V supply and is supplied with a 13A plug. Its absorbed power is rated at 2.8kW; a 32A supply may be required to achieve maximum output, so check the workshop circuit before fitting it for regular high-current work.
What is included and what wire will it accept?
The package includes a 2m non-live torch, mini gas regulator, spool of wire, gas hose, earth cable, hose clamp, gas cup and 0.6mm and 0.8mm contact tips. It accepts wire reels from 0.7kg to 5kg. For aluminium work, use argon, 0.8mm aluminium wire and a suitable 0.8mm contact tip.
