Expert Advice

Mark Allen

Mark Allen says

This is a 200L, 3hp, 230V belt-drive workshop compressor, suited to general bodyshop and garage air needs rather than continuous high-demand plant use.

In a real bodyshop it typically sits as a fixed main receiver feeding spray guns, air tools, blow guns and tyre equipment via a ring main or manifold. The 200L receiver gives a decent buffer for short bursts of higher demand, such as impact wrenches or DA sanders, provided duty cycle is respected.

Key technical points: it is a 3hp single‑phase machine, so it needs a good 13A supply with proper cable sizing and minimal extension leads. Being belt drive with around 10–13 cfm displacement and about 8–9.7 cfm free air delivery, it will comfortably run one typical bodyshop workstation, but not multiple high draw tools at once.

In practice, the most common issues I see are undersized wiring, poor drainage of condensate, and unrealistic expectations on continuous sanding. Treated correctly, with regular oil checks and tank draining, this type of Sealey unit is a reliable, efficient backbone compressor for small to medium workshops.

Technical Features

  • Beltdriven pump with aluminium cylinders and cast iron liners to reduce weight while maintaining good wear resistance for longterm workshop use
  • Genuine 3hp singlephase motor on 230V supply, suitable for running from a standard 13A circuit in most UK bodyshops and garages
  • Heavyduty drive guards around belt and flywheel to protect moving parts and direct airflow over the pump for improved cooling during continuous duty
  • Large 200L receiver tank providing a stable air reserve for tasks such as spraying, air tools and general workshop air demand without constant cycling
  • Precision welded receiver manufactured to meet Pressure Vessel Directive requirements, giving reliable performance under repeated pressurisation
  • Fully automatic pressure cutout control so the compressor starts and stops as needed, avoiding manual intervention and reducing risk of overpressure
  • Twin pressure gauges showing both tank pressure and working line pressure, making it easy to set and monitor air supply for different tools
  • Quickrelease outlet coupling for fast connection and disconnection of airline hoses without tools, supporting typical bodyshop air systems
  • Designed as a generalpurpose workshop compressor, suitable for common bodyshop operations including airpowered tools, blowing down, and light spray work
  • Floormounted configuration with stable footprint and low centre of gravity, helping keep the machine steady when running and during movement around the workshop

FAQs

What duty cycle and applications is the Sealey SAC20030B 200L 3hp compressor suited to in a professional workshop?
This 200L belt drive unit is a general-purpose workshop compressor, suited to typical bodyshop and garage tasks such as air tools, blow guns, light sanders, small DA sanders and spray guns. With a free air delivery around 6.4cfm (180L/min) and 8bar max pressure, it is best treated as a medium-duty machine, not a continuous supply for multiple high-consumption tools. In practice, it works well for single-bay use, panel prep, trim tools and intermittent use of ½in impact guns. For continuous running large DA sanders, air-fed masks or multiple bays, BWS engineers would normally recommend stepping up to a higher output or multi-cylinder machine.
What power supply does the SAC20030B need and can I run it from a standard UK socket?
The SAC20030B is a single-phase 230V compressor with a 3hp motor and a quoted input current of 13A. It is supplied with a 3‑pin plug and specified for a minimum 13A supply, so it can run from a properly rated UK 13A circuit in good condition. In workshop use, we advise a short, good‑quality feed on a dedicated circuit where possible, avoid long extension leads, and ensure the ring main is not already heavily loaded with welders or heaters. If your incoming supply is marginal or you are running other heavy loads, speak to an electrician or BWS for advice on the best circuit arrangement.
Is the SAC20030B suitable for bodyshop spraying and air tools, and how many outlets does it have?
The compressor is suitable for general-purpose workshop and bodyshop work, including lighter spray work, blow guns and common air tools. However, with around 6.4cfm free air delivery at 8bar, it is better matched to LVLP/HVLP guns with lower air demand and single-bay operations rather than full-time production spraying. The compressor uses a quick release outlet and is typically supplied with twin gauges for tank and working pressure, so you can regulate line pressure for spray guns and still monitor receiver pressure. If you plan to run constant high draw tools or multiple lines, consider either an additional receiver or a higher output model and we can advise on sizing.
What maintenance does the SAC20030B require and can BWS support servicing and parts?
The SAC20030B is a belt driven, lubricated compressor with aluminium cylinders and cast iron liners, so it requires regular oil checks and changes, drain-down of the 200L receiver to remove condensate, and periodic inspection of belts, guards and safety valves. Noise is around 97dB(A), so situating it in a plant area and keeping guards in place is important. For professional workshops, we recommend a basic daily check (oil level, leaks, drain water) and scheduled servicing in line with the manual and pressure system regulations. BWS engineers can support installation, routine servicing, statutory examinations via partner schemes, and supply genuine Sealey spares such as belts, filters and valves to keep the unit reliable in long-term workshop use.
