Engineer Advice

Dan Jennings

Dan Jennings says

This is a compact petrol inverter generator for supplying stable 230 V power where mains isn’t available. In a bodyshop or workshop I’d use this type of unit for running low to medium draw equipment on mobile repair work, light tooling, or to support diagnostic gear and battery chargers away from fixed supplies, rather than for big weld sets or heavy compressors.

Because it’s an inverter machine, the output is better suited to sensitive electronics than a conventional open-frame generator, which matters if you’re powering laptops, scan tools or smart chargers. The rated continuous output is modest, so you need to be realistic about load planning and avoid starting multiple high inrush tools at once.

A common issue is people assuming “2 kW” means it will comfortably run any 2 kW device continuously; in practice you need to allow for starting currents, duty cycle, and heat buildup in a busy workshop day.

Used correctly, it’s a useful, portable power source that offers decent runtime and clean voltage, provided you keep within its limits and maintain it properly.
