Expert Advice

Jason

Jason says

This is a 45 amp air plasma cutter designed for clean cutting and gouging on steels and typical bodyshop fabrication work. In a real workshop you’d use it for brackets, jig fixtures, chassis repairs, light structural sections and general sheet and plate work where oxy-fuel is slower or creates too much heat.

From a technical point of view, correct air supply and cartridge choice are critical. The SmartSYNC torch and single-piece cartridges make setup faster, but you still need dry, stable air and the right cartridge type for drag cutting, fine detail or gouging. Recommended cutting is around 16 mm at sensible travel speeds, so I treat it as a day-to-day cutter for typical automotive and light fabrication, not heavy structural plate.

A common issue I see is operators pushing travel speed or trying to cut beyond the recommended thickness, which quickly compromises edge quality and consumable life. Used within its capacity, with proper earthing and air, the Powermax45 SYNC is a reliable, efficient plasma solution for modern bodyshops and workshops.

FAQs

What material thickness and types is the Hypertherm Powermax45 SYNC suited for in a professional workshop?
The Powermax45 SYNC is a 45 amp air plasma system rated to cut mild steel up to around 16 mm (5/8 inch) at good production speeds, with severance up to about 29 mm for occasional heavier cuts. It will cut and gouge mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium using clean, dry compressed air or nitrogen, so it covers typical fabrication, repair work and bodyshop brackets, chassis sections and general plate cutting.
What power supply does the Powermax45 SYNC require and is it suitable for UK workshops?
Models are available for 200–240 V single phase and 400–415 V three phase supplies, both 50/60 Hz, so it fits typical UK bodyshops and fabrication workshops. The single phase version requires roughly a 32–40 A fused supply at 230 V, and the three phase 400 V version draws around 10 A. For generator use you should allow around 10–12.5 kVA to get the full 45 A output without nuisance trips.
How do the SYNC cartridges and SmartSYNC torch affect consumable choice and running costs?
Instead of separate electrode, nozzle and shield parts, the Powermax45 SYNC uses single-piece colour-coded cartridges in the SmartSYNC torch. Yellow cartridges are for handheld drag cutting, grey for mechanised cutting, green for gouging, plus black options for flush cut and HyAccess. The torch automatically reads the cartridge type and sets mode and current, reducing setup errors and helping consumables last longer. Genuine Hypertherm cartridges give the best life and cut quality, and BWS can supply the correct types for your work.
Is the Powermax45 SYNC a good fit for bodyshops and fabrication workshops, and what support can BWS provide?
For trade users needing one machine for regular cutting, occasional gouging and marking, the Powermax45 SYNC is a solid choice: portable, 45 A output, good cut quality on automotive steels and aluminium, and straightforward to set up thanks to automatic gas and voltage control and the SYNC cartridges. In a bodyshop it suits panel brackets, reinforcement plates, jig fixtures and light chassis work; in fabrication it handles general plate and section cutting up to around 16 mm comfortably. BWS engineers can advise on correct installation, air supply sizing, cartridge selection, CNC/mechanised setups, and provide ongoing service and repair support to keep the system reliable in daily workshop use.
