Engineer Advice
Paul Jones says
In day-to-day use the key is correct pairing with the welder’s output type and voltage range, and good mechanical setup of the 4-roll drive. Tension wants to be firm enough to prevent slip, but not so high that you deform softer wires or fight liners and contact tips. For mobile welding off a diesel welder generator, cable lengths, earth quality and gas supply routing all need thinking through if you’re on sites or around vehicles.
A common issue I see is operators blaming the welder for an unstable arc when the problem is worn drive rolls, poor tension, or the wrong groove type for the wire material. Set up properly, a good 4-roll feeder is extremely reliable and gives stable wire delivery, which translates directly into cleaner welds and better productivity in the workshop.
