Expert Advice

Jason

Jason says

The Cobra by Stealth battery arc welder is a portable MMA unit for repair work where a mains supply is unavailable or inconvenient. I see it being useful for site repairs, fabrication work and bodyshop tasks requiring occasional stick welding away from the main welding bay.

In practice, the lithium battery provides useful mobility, but the job still needs to be planned around charge level and duty cycle. Electrode choice and material preparation remain important, particularly when welding heavier sections or working on contaminated steel. The variable current control allows the operator to match the setting to the rod and material rather than relying on maximum output.

A common issue with battery welders is treating them like a continuous-duty mains machine. Repeated high-current welding will reduce available run time and may require cooling or recharging before the job is complete. I recommend checking the battery display before starting and keeping the charger available where possible.

Used within its duty cycle, it is a practical and reliable option for controlled welding in areas without dependable power.

FAQs

Can the Cobra by Stealth Arc 180 be used away from mains power?
Yes. Its 740 Wh lithium-ion battery provides cordless MMA arc welding for workshop, mobile repair and site work where a mains supply is unavailable. The machine has a 10–180 A MMA welding range and includes the earth cable and electrode holder.
How quickly does the battery charge?
The supplied charger can bring the battery to approximately 80% in around 60 minutes. A full charge is listed at approximately 100 minutes, so allow for the longer figure when planning extended welding work.
What welding output and duty cycle does it provide?
For MMA welding, the Arc 180 provides 10–180 A, with a duty cycle of 10% at 180 A, 20% at 130 A and 100% at 60 A. It also supports TIG welding from 10–150 A, subject to the appropriate TIG setup.
What is supplied and how portable is the machine?
The kit includes the battery, super-fast charger, earth cable and electrode holder. At approximately 11.5 kg, with dimensions of 440 × 150 × 280 mm, it is practical to move between workshop areas or take to off-site repair work. Built-in over-voltage, under-voltage and overheat protection helps protect the machine during professional use.
