What Is Local Exhaust Ventilation Testing?

LEV is an engineering control used to reduce the risk of inhalation of substances hazardous to health in a workplace, such as dust, gas, mist, fume or vapour.

Typically, these substances may cause respiratory diseases such as occupational asthma, cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

LEV systems perform an essential function to protect health. They must be properly designed, installed, commissioned, tested and maintained to be effective. It is essential that employers use competent LEV engineers.

Whats Involved

Our experienced engineers are able to carry out this testing on site during machine services to reduce costs using the latest test equipment and practices.

Testing is carried out in accordance with the guidelines set out in the Health & Safety Executives Guidance HSG258.

  • A thorough visual examination is carried out of the equipment to verify the LEV is in efficient working order, in good repair and in a clean condition.
  • Mechanical and electrical testing of the unit and its working functions against manufacturers specifications.
  • Cleaning/replacement of filters if required.
  • Pass of fail certification.

Welding Fume Regulations & Why It Is Classified as Carcinogenic

Why Welding Fume Is Dangerous

Welding fume is officially classified as a human carcinogen. In 2019, the Health and Safety Executive strengthened its enforcement position following scientific evidence linking exposure to lung cancer and other serious respiratory diseases.

This applies to all welding fume, including mild steel welding — not just stainless steel.

Welding fumes can contain harmful airborne particles and gases including:

  • Hexavalent chromium
  • Nickel compounds
  • Manganese
  • Ozone
  • Nitrogen oxides
  • Fine particulate metal dust

Current UK Welding Fume Regulations

Under the Health and Safety Executive guidance and COSHH regulations, employers must:

  • Control exposure to welding fumes
  • Use suitable Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV)
  • Maintain and test extraction systems regularly
  • Provide suitable respiratory protective equipment (RPE) where required
  • Ensure extraction is effectively capturing fumes at source

HSE inspectors now pay particular attention to:

  • Welding fume extraction performance
  • LEV inspection records
  • Capture efficiency
  • Filter condition
  • Airflow measurements
  • Operator positioning and working methods
welding fume LEV Test

Welding Fume LEV Testing

We provide onsite welding fume extraction testing and LEV examination services for bodyshops, fabrication workshops and repair centres across the UK. Our engineers test extraction airflow performance, hood capture efficiency and system condition to help ensure harmful welding fumes are being effectively removed from the working environment.

Regular LEV testing helps workshops remain compliant, protects technicians and ensures extraction systems continue operating safely and efficiently.

PAPR Welding Helmet Testing & Airflow Checks

We provide onsite testing and inspection of Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) welding helmets used within bodyshops, fabrication workshops and industrial welding environments. Our engineers carry out practical checks on airflow performance, filter condition, battery operation, hose integrity and general system functionality to help ensure respiratory protection equipment is operating safely and effectively for technicians.

Regular inspection and verification of PAPR systems helps workshops maintain compliance, improve operator safety and ensure respiratory equipment continues performing correctly in demanding working environments.
