Expert Advice

Paul Jones

Paul Jones says

This is a 3 hp, 200 litre belt‑driven workshop compressor intended as a fixed air supply for general bodyshop and light industrial use. In practice, it suits a small to medium bay running typical tools – DA sanders, air saws, small blast pots, rivet guns and spray guns – as long as you respect the roughly 9 CFM FAD output and don’t overdraw it continuously.

In a real bodyshop I’d normally pair this size of unit with sensible air management: short, properly sized pipe runs, water traps near spray guns, and regular draining of the receiver. It is single phase, so it’s attractive where only 230 V is available, but it really wants a good, dedicated supply and correct plug/fuse arrangement to avoid nuisance tripping and slow starting under load.

Common issue I see is people expecting it to comfortably run two or three high‑draw air tools constantly; it won’t. Used within its duty limits and maintained properly, it’s a reliable workhorse for general workshop air needs.

Technical Features

  • Cast iron twincylinder beltdriven pump designed for continuous workshop duty on a 3hp, singlephase 230V supply.
  • 200litre static receiver gives good air storage for running impact wrenches, ratchets, air chisels, underseal guns and tyre inflators in a small bodyshop or garage.
  • Cast iron cylinder block and slowrunning pump speed for reduced noise, cooler running and longer service life in daily professional use.
  • Heavyduty industrial motor with integral overload protection for reliable starting and protection against abuse on workshop electrical circuits.
  • Automatic stop/start control with prewired installation so the compressor cycles on demand and does not require manual switching during normal operation.
  • Fitted aftercooler and aerodynamic flywheel to improve cooling and reduce moisture carryover into the airline compared with basic hobby compressors.
  • Air receiver manufactured to current European pressure vessel standards (2014/29EU / 09/105 CE) for compliance and safety in professional environments.
  • Approximately 13 CFM displacement and 9 CFM free air delivery, suitable for singleuser pneumatic tools and most bodyshop air applications at 10 bar / 145 psi.
  • Factorybuilt and tested in Manchester, UK, providing traceable build quality and straightforward access to parts and technical backup.
  • Supplied with ½″ BSP female outlet, making it easy to connect to standard workshop airline systems, filters and regulators.
  • Around 74 dB(A) noise level and slowrunning design, making it more acceptable for indoor workshops where operators are working close to the compressor.
  • Twoyear conditional, onsite parts and labour warranty when correctly registered, giving confidence for longterm professional use.
  • Optional antivibration mounting feet available from some suppliers to reduce transmitted vibration into workshop floors and pipework.
  • Suitable as a primary air source in singlephase sites, including small bodyshops and repair centres that cannot justify or power a larger threephase compressor.
  • Robust lowbake paint finish and heavy steel receiver for durability against knocks, vibration and the typical environment of a busy workshop.

FAQs

What power supply and air output does the Workhorse 3hp 200L compressor require for workshop use?
This model is a single phase 230V static compressor with a 3.0 hp motor and a 200 litre receiver. It delivers around 13 CFM displacement with approximately 9 CFM free air delivery, so it suits light to medium workshop duty such as small spray work, air tools, tyre inflation and general bodyshop use on a single-bay setup. We recommend a suitably rated fused supply and allowing a sensible margin between your tool’s FAD requirement and the compressor’s 9 CFM output.
Is the Workhorse 3hp 200L compressor suitable for bodyshops and professional garages?
Yes, it is designed for professional workshop use. It uses a belt‑driven twin cylinder pump with a cast iron block, slow running speed, aftercooler and heavy duty motor with overload protection. The 200 litre receiver and automatic stop/start controls make it well suited to bodyshops, garages and repairers running common pneumatic tools, providing a reliable air supply in a single phase environment.
What maintenance does the Workhorse 3hp 200L compressor need in a busy workshop?
Routine tasks include checking and topping up compressor oil, draining condensate from the 200 litre receiver daily, checking belt condition and tension, and ensuring all safety devices and pressure switches operate correctly. Filters should be kept clean to maintain FAD performance. In professional use we recommend regular servicing by competent engineers; BWS can support with service, genuine parts and repair if required.
How does BWS support workshops running the Workhorse 3hp 200L compressor?
BWS supplies this compressor with practical technical advice on sizing, installation and correct application for your bodyshop or workshop. Our engineering team can assist with setup, pipework and regulator selection, and we provide ongoing service, warranty support and repairs using genuine parts. That means you get a realistic specification, proper commissioning guidance and long‑term backup rather than just a boxed machine.
