Expert Advice

Paul Jones

Paul Jones says

This is a 10 hp, 270 litre, three‑phase, belt‑driven piston compressor suited to busy bodyshops and fabrication workshops where multiple air tools run all day. In practice it sits as a fixed plant unit feeding ring mains for DA sanders, spray guns, blow guns and general workshop pneumatics, typically at around 8–10 bar.

The main technical points I look at are free air delivery versus demand, and the electrical supply. This type of unit gives roughly 29 CFM FAD at 10 bar, which is fine for a couple of sanders and a gun, but it will struggle if you try to run the whole shop from it. It also needs a proper 400 V three‑phase supply, usually on a 32 A breaker with correct cable sizing and isolation.

Common issues I see are undersized airline systems, poor drainage and no allowance for aftercooling or dryers, leading to water in the lines. Set up correctly and maintained, this size of compressor is a solid, reliable workhorse for a professional workshop.

Technical Features

  • Cast iron twincylinder pump for consistent, highvolume air delivery suitable for demanding bodyshop and workshop applications.
  • 10HP threephase 400V heavy duty industrial motor with overload protection for reliable continuous operation on a 32A supply.
  • Large 270litre static receiver providing good stored air capacity for spray booths, air tools, DA sanders and general workshop use.
  • Approximate 38.5 CFM displacement and around 29.5 CFM FAD, giving enough output for multiple air tools or continuoususe equipment.
  • Beltdriven layout with slowrunning pump speeds to reduce noise, lower pump stress and extend service life.
  • Integrated aftercooler to drop air temperature from the pump, improving moisture separation and protecting downstream equipment.
  • Aerodynamic flywheel design to aid compressor cooling and maintain stable running temperatures in busy workshops.
  • Automatic start/stop control on pressure switch for unattended operation and reduced energy waste when the receiver is charged.
  • Air receiver built and tested to the latest European pressure vessel standards, supporting safe use and compliance for professional sites.
  • Built and tested in Manchester, UK, with genuine Workhorse/Fiac parts, simplifying service, spares and longterm support.
  • Full factory engineer backup and conditional twoyear warranty when installed and maintained correctly, giving trade users confidence in longterm reliability.
  • Supplied prewired ready to install by a qualified electrician, helping minimise setup time in a new or existing workshop.
  • Suitable as a primary shop compressor for medium to large bodyshops, or as a dedicated supply for highdemand equipment such as shot blasting cabinets or multibay air tool lines.

FAQs

What kind of workshop is this compressor suited to?
It suits a busy bodyshop, garage or fabrication workshop that needs a proper 3-phase air supply for tools with steady demand. With a 270 litre receiver and around 29.5 CFM free air delivery, it is better for regular workshop use than light intermittent jobs.
Does it need three-phase power?
Yes. This model is a 400V, 3-phase belt-driven compressor, so it needs an appropriate three-phase supply and starter arrangement rather than standard 230V single-phase power.
What air output does it deliver?
The compressor is rated at 38.5 CFM displacement and 29.5 CFM free air delivery, with a maximum pressure of 10 bar. That makes it suitable for running multiple air tools, bodyshop equipment and general workshop tasks where a larger receiver helps maintain pressure.
What are the key build features?
It uses cast iron blocks, twin-cylinder pumps, aftercoolers, aerodynamic flywheels and automatic stop/start controls. The slow-running pump design is intended to keep noise down and improve service life, which is useful in a workshop that runs air equipment daily.
