Expert Advice

Jason

Jason says

This is a compact plasma cutter with a built‑in compressor, suited to mobile repair work and lighter fabrication in and around the bodyshop. I use it where you’d normally drag an oxy‑fuel set or small 110/240 V inverter around the site, particularly for brackets, thin chassis sections, exhaust work and general sheet steel up to typical bodyshop thicknesses.

Because the air supply is integrated, you’re not worrying about a separate compressor, but you do still need to respect duty cycle and mains supply. On 240 V it will sustain sensible cutting on automotive and light structural sections; on lower voltage the available duty cycle drops, so planning your cuts matters.

A common issue I see is users trying to push it through material that really needs a higher‑capacity plasma, then blaming the machine for slow speed and rough edges. Kept within its intended thickness range, with clean work return and sensible travel speed, it’s a reliable way to get quick, accurate cuts without overcomplicating the setup.

Technical Features

  • Builtin air compressor for true plugandcut portability on jobs where you do not want to drag an external compressor around
  • Dualvoltage operation, so it can be used from either 120 V or 240 V singlephase supplies depending on the version and local setup
  • Handheld plasma cutting for electrically conductive metals including mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium
  • Suitable for everyday workshop cutting, repair work and mobile use where a compact machine is more practical than a full plasma set and separate air supply
  • Continuous pilot arc for cutting through rusty, painted or expanded metal without constant retriggering
  • Patentpending consumable and airflow design aimed at stable cutting from the internal compressor
  • Quick setup with minimal ancillary equipment, since the air supply is integrated into the unit
  • Can be used anywhere there is singlephase power, which makes it handy for site work and remote repairs
  • Compact and lightweight for easier carrying between bays, vans and jobsites
  • Supplied as a readytouse package with torch, work clamp, consumables and carry strap on standard kits
  • Capable of clean, practical cutting for fabrication and bodyshop repair where a small portable plasma is more useful than a larger industrial system
  • Designed for simple operation, making it a straightforward option for occasional or mixeduse trade work

FAQs

Does the Powermax30 AIR need an external air compressor?
No. It has a built-in air compressor, so it is designed for cutting where you only have a single-phase mains supply and no workshop air line. That makes it handy for mobile repair work, on-site jobs, and smaller workshops that do not want another compressor on the floor.
What sort of cutting work is it suited to in a workshop?
It is best for light to medium cutting jobs such as brackets, repair sections, panels, tube, and general fabrication in thinner material. It is a compact 30 amp machine, so it suits day-to-day workshop use where portability matters more than high production cutting capacity.
What power supply does it run on?
It is a single-phase machine and can be used on 120 V or 240 V supplies, depending on the version and setup. For UK workshop use, it is the sort of kit that fits a normal single-phase environment rather than needing three-phase power.
Is the Powermax30 AIR a good choice for mobile or bodyshop use?
Yes. The internal compressor keeps the setup simple, so it is practical for mobile repair vans, bodyshops, and garages that need a cutter they can move between bays or take off site. It is a sensible choice when you want Hypertherm cut quality without relying on an external air system.
