Expert Advice

Paul Jones

Paul Jones says

The GAS ARC GA400 pressure and flow regulator is the sort of kit I use to keep shielding gas delivery consistent on MIG and TIG work in the workshop. In bodyshop and fabrication use, stable flow matters because poor gas control shows up quickly as porosity, erratic arc behaviour and unnecessary rework.

When fitting a regulator like this, I always pay attention to bottle connection type, outlet compatibility and whether the flow setting is being read correctly for the job. Too much gas can be just as unhelpful as too little, especially around draughts or when welding thinner sheet.

A common issue I see is damage or contamination at the cylinder connection, which then gives poor sealing or a creeping leak that wastes gas and causes nuisance faults.

Used properly, a sound regulator like this gives predictable gas control, cleaner welds and fewer interruptions, which is exactly what you want in a busy workshop.

Technical Features

  • Singlestage highpressure regulator providing combined pressure and flow control for gas cylinder outlet management up to 300 bar inlet service
  • Robust brass barstock construction designed to withstand daily use in industrial workshops, test bays and bodyshop environments
  • Configured for outlet pressure adjustment in the 0–20 bar range, suitable for highpressure testing, purging and controlled pressurisation tasks
  • Smooth, precise control of delivery pressure for repeatable test conditions on vessels, pipework and fire extinguisher charging
  • Designed for primary pressure regulation of noncorrosive technical gases in industrial, laboratory and research applications
  • Singlestage design where slight delivery pressure variation with cylinder pressure drop is acceptable, avoiding unnecessary complexity for typical workshop tasks
  • Compatible with oxygen service variants (e.g. GA400 Oxygen Regulator RAN04001 sideentry) for use on oxygen cylinders in test and process applications
  • Available in inert gas variants and panelmount versions, allowing the same regulator family to be used on fixed test rigs and bench panels
  • Sideentry cylinder connection options to keep the regulator closecoupled to the valve and reduce overall projection in busy workshop spaces
  • Inlet capability up to 300 bar allowing connection to modern highpressure cylinders without exceeding regulator ratings
  • Outlet connection arrangements suited to common industrial hose and pipe sizes, simplifying integration into existing workshop setups
  • Compact envelope and relatively low weight for easy handling, installation and repositioning between rigs or test stations
  • Pressure gauges compatible with highpressure service and compliant with relevant ISO standards, giving clear indication of both cylinder contents and outlet pressure
  • Encapsulated valve and inlet filter design (within the TechMaster family) to protect internal components from particulate contamination and extend service life
  • Safety relief provisions within the regulator family to vent excess pressure safely and reseal, important for continuous professional use
  • Fiveport style configuration (across GA/GPS/GPT ranges) offering flexible mounting, instrument takeoff or auxiliary connections where more complex test setups are required
  • Temperature range suitable for typical UK workshop conditions, ensuring stable performance in unheated bays and fabrication shops
  • Suitable for use in precision dent repair systems and other automotive bodyshop equipment where stable gas pressure and controlled flow are required
  • Engineered to meet laboratory and industrial gas control standards (TechMaster series built to ISO 2503 and related norms), giving confidence for regulated environments
  • Compatible with a range of cylinder connections (BS, DIN, CGA and Nevoc within the product family) so the same regulator platform can be matched to different gas suppliers
  • Suited to both mobile and fixed test setups, allowing bodyshops and industrial workshops to use one regulator type for onvehicle testing and bench work
  • Brass body with stainless steel filtration elements (within the TechMaster range) balancing corrosion resistance with serviceability for longterm workshop use

FAQs

What is the GA400 regulator designed for and what pressure range does it cover?
It is a compact single-stage high-pressure regulator built in robust brass for primary pressure control up to a maximum inlet of 300 bar, with an adjustable outlet pressure range of 0–20 bar. It is widely used for high-pressure testing and purging of vessels and fire extinguishers, as well as general industrial, laboratory and research gas applications.
Is the GAS ARC GA400 suitable for workshop and bodyshop use?
Yes. The GA400 is designed to withstand daily use thanks to its brass construction and single-stage layout, making it suitable for workshops, garages and bodyshops where high-pressure gas is used for testing, purging and process support. It is appropriate for fixed installations or mobile test rigs where reliable control of cylinder pressure down to working pressure is required.
Which gases and applications is the GA400 typically used with?
The GA400 series includes versions for oxygen, CO2 and inert gases, so selection must match the gas and connection on your cylinder. In practice it is used for oxygen service on test benches, CO2 for vessel and extinguisher work, and inert gases in lab and research setups where you need stable outlet pressure rather than a precise welding flowmeter. Always choose the correct GA400 variant for the gas type and thread standard on your cylinders.
What should workshops check for compatibility before buying a GA400 regulator?
Check the gas type, cylinder connection standard and required outlet pressure before ordering. The GA400 is single-stage with 0–20 bar output, so it suits applications needing up to 20 bar delivery from cylinders up to 300 bar. Make sure your cylinder valve thread matches the specific GA400 model (for example oxygen side-entry RAN04001) and that your downstream equipment—hoses, test rigs, purge lines—is rated for the outlet pressure you intend to use. If unsure, BWS engineers can advise on the correct GA400 variant and fittings for your installation.
