Engineer Advice

Paul Jones

Paul Jones says

This is a 10 hp, 270 litre rotary screw compressor intended as the main air supply in a busy bodyshop or workshop, running tools, spray booths and general air demand throughout the day. In practice it sits as a fixed plant unit, feeding a ring main where air usage is fairly constant rather than occasional.

From an engineering point of view, the key considerations are duty cycle and air quality. A screw unit like this is happiest running for longer periods rather than short, rapid start–stop cycles, so sizing against the workshop’s true CFM demand is important. Correct pipe sizing, decent filtration, and, where painting is involved, pairing with a proper dryer is critical to avoid moisture and contamination issues down the line.

A common problem I see is compressors installed in cramped, hot plant rooms with poor ventilation. That shortens service intervals and causes nuisance trips. Give it space, airflow, and keep to the service schedule.

Set up correctly, this type of compressor gives reliable, efficient air delivery for professional bodyshop use with minimal operator fuss.
