Engineer Advice

Mark Allen

Mark Allen says

This is a mobile local exhaust ventilation unit for welding fume, so I treat it as a point-of-use extraction solution for single bays or roaming welders on 230 V supply. In a typical bodyshop or fabrication workshop it sits on its four castors and is wheeled to wherever MIG, TIG or MMA work is being done, with the 3 m arm positioned to pull fume directly from the weld zone before it reaches the operator.

The key technical consideration is hood positioning and arm stability. The Armur’s articulated/Armoflex or Armotech arm is designed to stay where it is set, but in practice you still need to train staff to keep the hood close and adjust it as they move along a seam. Filter loading is the other common issue: once the unit is in regular use, clogged filters and reduced airflow appear quickly if no one owns the maintenance.

Used correctly, with sensible hood placement and routine filter checks, it gives reliable, compliant fume control without tying the welder to a fixed bay.
