Aluminium TIG filler rods are a key part of achieving clean, controlled repairs in modern automotive bodyshops, especially where precision and finish are critical. TIG welding gives you far greater control over heat input compared to MIG, which is ideal for thinner panels, intricate work, and visible areas where weld quality matters.
Choosing the correct filler rod is just as important as the welding technique itself. Alloys such as 4043 and 5356 are commonly used, but they behave very differently. 4043 offers smoother flow and a cleaner finish, making it ideal for cosmetic repairs, while 5356 provides higher strength and is better suited to structural work where durability is more important.
Preparation is absolutely critical with aluminium TIG work. The material must be clean, oxide-free, and handled with dedicated tools to avoid contamination. Even small amounts of dirt or oxide will affect arc stability and weld quality, so taking the time to prep properly makes a noticeable difference.
From a practical point of view, TIG is slower than MIG, but in a bodyshop environment it’s often the better choice for repair quality. When set up correctly, it allows you to produce precise, low-distortion welds that require minimal finishing, which is exactly what you want when working on modern aluminium vehicle panels.
