Body Chisels and Splitters for Professional Bodyshop and Workshop Use

Body chisels and splitters are hand and impact tools used to separate panels, remove seams and cut through spot welds in vehicle bodywork. I use chisels for controlled removal of small sections, cleaning weld edges and trimming seams; splitters are used where a clean separation is needed without excessive distortion. In a workshop they’re employed with hammers, pneumatic tools or hydraulic aids depending on access and the panel material. Key technical considerations are edge hardness and geometry — a blunt or incorrectly shaped chisel will catch and tear thin steel — and compatibility with the substrate and any coatings. Control of impact energy and correct backing support are important to avoid panel buckling. A common issue is using too large an impact on thin outer skins, which causes creasing or cold fractures around the repair area. Used and maintained correctly, chisels and splitters provide reliable, efficient panel removal and reduce the amount of additional metal preparation required.
