Expert Advice

Mark Allen

Mark Allen says

This is a 3hp, 200-litre, 230V belt-drive workshop compressor, suited to general air use in a professional bodyshop or garage rather than continuous industrial duty. In practice it will comfortably run typical bodyshop tools like blow guns, tyre inflators, small to mid-size DA sanders and occasional air ratchets, provided the air demand is managed sensibly.

Key technical points are supply and duty cycle. Being single-phase 230V with a 3hp motor, it needs a solid 13A supply and good cabling; borderline electrics are a common cause of hard starting and nuisance trips. The 200L receiver gives a useful buffer, but it does not turn this into a high-flow compressor for constant twin-orbit sander use.

From experience, the most common issues are lack of regular draining, leading to water in airlines, and unrealistic expectations about continuous output. Set it up with proper drainage, correct hose bore and realistic tool loading, and it’s a reliable, efficient air source for day-to-day bodyshop work.

Technical Features

  • Suitable for professional bodyshops and workshops with enough air for continuous use thanks to the 200L receiver and beltdriven pump layout.
  • Genuine 3hp singlephase motor designed to run from a standard 230V 13A supply, making it practical for most UK workshops without threephase.
  • Twin capacitors and centrifugal switch provide reliable startup on a 13A circuit, reducing nuisance tripping when the compressor cuts in.
  • Belt drive with heavyduty full cast cylinders and alloy cylinder heads for better heat dissipation, slower pump speed and longer service life under regular workshop use.
  • Flywheel and guard are designed to force cooling air over the pump, helping control running temperatures during extended duty cycles such as spraying, DA sanding or general air tool work.
  • 200L horizontal receiver gives good air storage to support higher demand tools and to reduce the frequency of motor cycling.
  • Fitted with automatic pressure switch for start/stop control, cutting out at working pressure and restarting as the tank pressure drops, so the unit can be left on during normal workshop use.
  • Tank and line pressures are displayed on twin gauges, allowing you to see both stored pressure and regulated outlet pressure at a glance.
  • Integrated pressure regulator with locking ring lets you set and lock working pressure to suit different tools, protecting spray guns and sensitive equipment from overpressure.
  • Quick release outlet coupling provides fast connection and changeover of air lines and tools commonly used in bodyshops.
  • Oillubricated pump with sight glass makes it easy to monitor oil level and maintain correct lubrication for reliability and longevity.
  • Designed for indoor use with appropriate ventilation, making it suitable for fixed installation in a compressor room or workshop corner.
  • Supplied with CE certification, pressure test certificates and full operating/maintenance manual, supporting compliance with workshop safety and inspection regimes.
  • Tank drain valve provided for daily removal of condensate, essential for corrosion control and for protecting downstream air tools and paint systems.
  • Thermal motor protection with manual reset helps protect the motor from overload or overheating in demanding workshop conditions.
  • Configured for use with genuine service parts and recommended synthetic compressor oil, supporting professional maintenance and longterm support from BWS engineers.
